On this page you will find a CV for Mr. Duncan Gareth Kimpton MEng (Hons) MIEE, certain details have been omitted for security reason (e.g. my address) but are available upon request.
Profile |
My primary interest is development of user interfaces, both for application software and internet systems. I have several years experience in design and development of such interfaces, building on my foundations as a competent and accomplished programmer. I also have significant experience of system administration, building, and maintenance. I am a great team player who works best in demanding environments.
I am looking for something new and challenging; ideally this would involve taking a new user facing project from concept to completion in C# or C++. I am willing to relocate for the right job, including global re-location as required. |

Avantium Technologies UK Ltd
Working for Avantium my primary responsibility is the development of a data analysis package for use in high throughput analysis. This product is a modular Java application capable of handling large volumes of data in an intuitive and repeatable manner.
I work as part of a small team of 3 and am intimately involved in all stages of product development from requirements capture and analysis through to shipping of the completed product. Thus I have gained broad experience with significant time being spent on Java and XML development, graphic design, technology integration, intra/internet development, build process development, technical writing and systems administration.
Repeat customers of this software include GSK and Pfizer as well as in-house use within Avantium; we have often found tasks that would normally take days being reduced to hours or even minutes using this product.

GSE Systems UK Ltd (formerly BatchCAD Ltd)
During these periods I had the opportunity to work on the BatchCAD chemical simulation software. I was initially involved in writing the Windows interface for this product, using a third party toolkit working in C++. Later I was authorised to work on the core simulation system and, in the summer of 2000, I was asked to participate in the design of the next version of this software. During this work I gained significant experience in C++, Windows programming, and system design. Some of the later work involved XML.
Other projects for which I was given responsibility were the design and implementation of a corporate intranet, PC assembly and maintenance, and writing bespoke software development tools.
I was also involved in the preparation and execution of the BatchCAD V7 launch conference.

Voluntary Employment Experience |
Q3 & Q4 2001 |
|
Enforced Convalesence
Due to RSI I was unable to actively use the PC, so instead I used this time to study advanced C++ techniques and to learn more about user interface design.

Weston Hall
I was elected to the communications subcommittee. With responsibility for a Web based version of the hall newsletter and assisting in other communications tasks around the hall.
|
Professional Membership |
Member of both the IEE and BCS for nearly 7 years, attaining the grade of MIEE and Graduate Member of the BCS. For two of those years I sat on the IEE Younger members committee. In 1998 and 1999 I entered the BCS team programming competition, both times reaching the national final. I enjoy taking an active role in events and extra-curricular lectures. |
Qualifications Earned |
MENG(HONS) in Computer Systems Engineering Taken June 2001 Studied at the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST). |
This masters 4-year degree covered a broad spectrum of subjects in the field of computing, ranging from high level programming in C and C++, to understanding the electronic principles upon which modern computer hardware is built. This qualification is approved by the Institution of Electrical Engineers and the British Computer Society! |

| Year 4 |
|
Highly parallel, distributed systems, and Internet technology. Object interaction, process flow, and enterprise knowledge modelling. |
| Project work |
|
Major team project in association with Philips Semiconductor to develop a technique for digital control of Trench+ MOSFET’s, intended for use in the automotive industry. The project involved concurrent PC software, real time embedded software, digital and analogue electronics, and control systems engineering. I also assumed the role of co-ordinator for this project. |
| |
| Year 3 |
|
Computer graphics, visualisation, vision, and image understanding. Neural networks. Real time systems. Application of formal methods. Project and financial management. |
| Project work |
|
Major individual project to develop a parser, evaluation unit, and user interface for the entering and manipulation of chemical rate expressions. Also I undertook a project to write an OpenGL solar system simulator using a custom sphere drawing algorithm. Both projects were in C++ using the Win32 API. |
| |
| Year 2 |
|
Electronic and microcomputer engineering. Digital processes and system design. Embedded systems development. Formal specifications. Language theory and implementation. Software analysis and design. Object orientated programming. Concurrent systems. Engineering mathematics. |
| Project work |
|
Two practical team projects, one to develop a computer expansion card using the VME Bus, the other to design and write an Intruder Tracking system. Also one design and analyse project to plan a database system for use in airline booking and baggage tracking. |
| |
| Year 1 |
|
Electric and magnetic fundamentals. Basic electronic design and circuit analysis. Computer systems architecture. Data structures, algorithms, programming, and program design. Mathematics. |

Other Interests |
I am passionate about digital photography and the power of expression it provides, I also enjoy art and have a love of woodwork; culminating in such ambitious projects as the design and construction of an oak dining table. I also have experience in the art of bee keeping and related topics, such as candle making, honey production, and sales. I have been a member of QEHS Rowing Club where I was primarily a Cox, this gave me experience of managing others and taught me the importance of listening to others opinions and working as a cohesive team. I carried on this interest by joining the UMIST rowing club where I learned better rowing techniques and flat water rowing. Other hobbies I have include Electronics design projects, reading widely, and keeping fit. |
